A limited number of Sessions are available for Consultants to teach innovative means and methods and for software vendors to demonstrate new or improved products. A limited number of Project Showcase Sessions are also available. Members of the construction community are invited to submit abstracts describing how YOUR project delivery was improved by superior CPM scheduling and project controls. WED24 - Reviewing, Inspecting, and Reporting CPM Logic in Microsoft Project Schedules
Complex sequencing logic can be difficult to review, inspect, or report in Microsoft Project, especially when constraints, variable calendars, and resource leveling complicate the Slack/Float calculations. BPC Logic Filter is an add-in that works inside Microsoft Project to provide logical information for both the planner and the reviewer of a complex schedule. The tool provides pre-formatted reports of the Driving and Driven Paths for any task, the Project Longest Path, Multiple Float Paths, Driving Path Drag, and the Resource Constrained Critical Path (for a leveled schedule). Recent additions include a Project Logic Checker and a Task Logic Inspector. The first helps to isolate widespread schedule issues like non-unique names, summary task links, dangling logic, and out-of-sequence progress. The second displays detailed information about task relationships while allowing the user to navigate forward and backward through the schedule network based on relationships (including resource-driving relationships) alone.

WED34 - Really Understanding MSP
Love it or hate it, Microsoft Project (MSP) CPM scheduling software is here to stay. Many construction contracts are now mandating its use. Most people using MSP on construction projects find that MSP is fine for planning the work but very difficult to use when maintaining the status and accurately forecasting project completion.

WED41 - File Corruption in P6 - An Advanced Review
An earlier paper by the authors introduces the topic of P6 File Corruption and endeavors to separate reality from perception. This paper further explains exactly how to repair cases of known corruption using the tools provided by the database server, as well as by Oracle® Primavera P6℠. The deficiencies of the original Primavera P6℠ Check Project Integrity routines are explained in an effort to make this utility more useful to IT experts or even P6 users, should this functionality be restored in the Oracle® Primavera P6 Professional℠ or the Oracle® Primavera EPPM℠.
The main emphasis of this paper is a dedicated research of the prevalence of P6 file corruption in the scheduling community and the types of problems experienced. To this end, the authors have developed a software research tool and invited various P6 users to participate in the discovery of this issue. Two PSP certified schedulers, who are also IT experts, present this unique paper on the subject of P6 File Corruption.

WED45 - Case Study: Polsen Bypass - Optimizing Mass Haul Plan Using Trimble TILOS
TILOS is a powerful, feature rich, distance-based planning tool than can be used for all infrastructure projects. TILOS is just one of several products in the Trimble Civil Software Continuum. Of note is the ability to import heavy civil volumetric cut and fill data from Trimble’s BC-HCE to easily create a workable, optimized linear plan in TILOS. This session will focus on the Polsen Bypass case study to illustrate how Trimble Quantm is used to select an optimal corridor and develop a 3D model to push into Trimble Business Center to calculate mass haul volumes and locations. This cut and fill data can be imported into TILOS to create a workable mass haul plan utilizing various methods (scraper, truck, dozer) based on haul distance and cycle time to calculate resources required for these activities. The integration of the tools and data demonstrates the effective interfacing in developing an optimized linear plan based on the engineering information and mass haul analysis. WED46 - Comparing Software - Our Shop Needs Folks Trained in 3 or More In the current environment there are numerous platforms used to create Critical Path Method (CPM) schedules. Among these are: Primavera P6, Open Plan, Asta, MS Project and a host of others lesser known programs. While these platforms are each capable of useful in creating a viable CPM schedule, each does so with a degree of uniqueness. With regard to their usefulness in a claims situation, the disparities are even more pronounced. The "Standard" Form Contract: Exploring the Decennial 2017 Changes to the AIA Contract Forms

The precursor to actual construction of a building or other project has to be focused on the construction contract, both for the construction of the work and for the avoidance or handling of disputes in regard to the work. Perhaps the most familiar standard forms – the AIA contract documents – change in substance typically once every 10 years, and 2017 was that year. In this presentation, we examine key AIA contract clauses, the 2017 changes to those, and the concept, generally, of utilizing standard form construction contracts in order to adequately take into account the needs of the particular job.

THU12 - Jobsite Photography Should be a Scheduler’s Job
Communicating and ‘proving’ the current construction jobsite status is difficult to do in prose. Pictures are often far more effective as they have the potential to present more information that any other medium. Problematically, they often fail to fully realize their potential in documenting the construction process. If digital pictures are so cheap and easy to produce, then what is the problem?
The problem arises when the photographer does not understand how to identify and compose a good picture or doing it so poorly as to be unusable. Other times, the failure comes from just losing the important information due to lack of organization or proper documentation of where and when the photo was taken.
Project schedulers have the inside track on becoming excellent jobsite photographers. All that they need is a better understanding of the equipment and techniques required to take and maintain terrific photos in the harsh environment of construction.

THU13 - Peer Review of a Schedule
In a recent report by the PMI recently (February 14, 2017) released, shows that Australia has a very poor track record, along with other parts of the world in managing large infrastructure projects. Cost blowouts and delays are common, especially in Government funded transport, hospital and communications projects. The NBN has had to recently obtain additional funding from the Federal Government. The new Royal Adelaide Hospital has overrun its budget by almost thirty percent and is will be over fifteen months late when it will be delivered.
On investigating the many major projects which have failed, it was noted than many of them did not perform the necessary in depth, project planning and scheduling as management did not see the value of spending the time and or the funding. No peer reviews or audits had taken place and as such any scheduling or cost shortcoming failed to be observed and so another project failure occurs. However, it is well known that taking the time and properly funding the project management, planning and scheduling and perform independent peer reviews do deliver successful projects.

THU23 - Early Completion Schedules – Benefits, Risks & Defenses
A contractor’s right to complete work early was acknowledged by U.S. Courts in the 1960’s. Delayed early completion claims arose shortly thereafter and became somewhat common in the industry. It was then, and remains now, a controversial issue in the construction industry with many project owners refusing to accept early completion baseline schedules or schedule updates indicating an early completion. Other owners crafted contractual mechanisms to prevent early completions schedules and/or defeat early completion delay claims. This presentation sets forth the background concerning a contractor’s right to complete work early; examines the contractor’s right to seek an equitable adjustment should their early completion be delayed by action of the owner; and discusses both the potential benefits and potential risks of early completion schedules. Additionally, this presentation provides a brief overview of twelve different ways owners can defend against claims oriented early completion schedules and includes specific contract language employed by some owners. FRED PLOTNICK will lead this Town Hall where we will engage the audience to share thoughts relevant to professional schedulers.
What do we want from our Tech Groups? How can AACE, PMI, Planning Planet and others best serve our subgroup of their general memberships?
What do we want of our softwares? We may generalize or perhaps look at several products and note how each may be improved to help us do our jobs.
What do we want of each other? How frustrating when the person on the “other side” (and this already indicates a lack of congeniality and cooperation) does not speak the same language as we do. Could requirements for certification or vetting by a tech group help? Could state licensing and the threat of revocation for malpractice help?
We will have competing views – both often correct. Will conferences such as CCC and sessions where attendees share competing thoughts help?

THU43 - The Effect of Activity Constraints on the Critical Path
This session will illustrate how various activity constraints affect Critical Path Method (CPM) schedules. The most commonly used constraint is “Start on or After” which is often used when a piece of equipment (or construction material or component) required for a task will not be available until a certain date; however, there are six other activity constraints that are commonly available. This webinar will highlight each of them and illustrate the profound effects they can have on the CPM calculated dates for a project. The Learning Objectives for the webinar are:

“Artificial Intelligence” (AI) and “machine learning” have been popular buzz words in 2017. This presentation walks through the basics of AI, examining the different approaches and how they are starting to be embraced and used in the science of CPM project scheduling. To date, the task of building a sound CPM project schedule has largely been a manual process. With AI, that is starting to change for the better, allowing planners to focus on planning rather than the tedious mechanical task of developing a CPM schedule. Through the help of AI, we can now re-use captured knowledge; learn from previous as-built schedules and develop truly calibrated and validated project plans that are more realistic and hence achievable.

Quantitative risk analysis methods such as Monte Carlo simulations enable project managers to assess how multiple risks might affect a project schedule. FRI33 - Schedule Simulation – The Lego Experience Part I
4D scheduling is not easy, and the multitude of other project requirements can be difficult to meet. If the project team is given a 4D schedule they might not be aware of how to use it, and many of the people who create 4D schedules do not have experience in using them. During this session, Lego Blocks will be used to simulate a 4D experience and to demonstrate the benefits of an active 4D process over traditional scheduling. The participants will have to maintain quality, schedule and scope while building their structure. Please bring your laptop, so you can actually use the models to build. After the session, participants will have a better understanding of how 4D, BIM and Lean are incorporated into traditional practices, how they can improve project performance, why it can be difficult for teams to adopt new practices, and what can be done to improve our VDC practices. All this, while playing with Legos!!
